Can RCR Raise
The Bar Again?
January 12, 2007
by: Steve Waid, Scene Daily
Last season, much praise was heaped upon Richard Childress
Racing, and deservedly so.
The three-car team broke out of the doldrums it had been
experiencing over several previous seasons. It made great
strides toward a return to the type of competitiveness it had
once enjoyed.
Driver Kevin Harvick finished fourth in points with five
victories. He had more top-five finishes (15) than in
2004-2005 combined. Jeff Burton finished seventh in points,
won his first race since 2001 and he, too, compiled more
finishes among the top five (seven) than in the combined two
previous seasons. Rookie Clint Bowyer finished 17th in points
and had a respectable first year.
All of this was, in part, the result of Childress’ diligence
in making numerous internal changes and adaptations he knew
his team needed if it was to escape mediocrity.
And the media noticed. RCR was given all due credit and
attention for its return to prominence.
OK, the 2007 Nextel Cup season will soon be upon us. And the
question for RCR is: Will it remain at its current competitive
level, improve upon on it, or (shudder) drift back into the
shadows?
According to Harvick, a taste of success has everyone at RCR
working to reach the next level.
Harvick noted that team intends to stay in its new mode and
keep everything evolving. That’s one reason why, he added, RCR
team members didn’t mind working extra hours or taking on
additional tasks to prepare the “car of tomorrow.”
Harvick makes a point. Once teams reach a high level of
competitiveness, it always takes hard work – and likely more
of it – to stay there.
