Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 4 ditech Chevrolet SS, led the four-car Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) contingent Friday at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway by setting the seventh-fastest lap in qualifying for Sunday’s Food City 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. Harvick turned a lap of 15.215 seconds at 126.112 mph on the .533-mile oval in the final qualifying round.

Qualifying consisted of three rounds. The first was 20 minutes, with every driver on the track vying to set the fastest lap. The 24 fastest drivers from the first round advanced to the second, 10-minute round and the fastest 12 drivers from that session advanced to the final, five-minute round where they battled for the pole. Positions 1-12 were set by speeds in the final round. Positions 13-24 were set by speeds in the second round. The remaining 40-car field was set by speeds posted by those who did not advance past the first round.

Kurt Busch, driver of the No. 41 Haas Automation/Monster Energy Chevrolet SS for SHR, qualified 26th with a time of 15.249 seconds at 125.831 mph.

Danica Patrick, driver of the No. 10 Nature’s Bakery Chevrolet SS for SHR, qualified 33rd with a time of 15.350 seconds at 125.003 mph.

Ty Dillon, interim driver of the No. 14 Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Boats Chevrolet SS for SHR, qualified 34th with a time of 15.427 seconds at 124.379 mph. Dillon hit the apron while coming up to speed on his first qualifying attempt, which saw the No. 14 Chevrolet slide down the backstretch and into the No. 38 car of Landon Cassill. The Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Boats team was able to make the necessary repairs to their racecar that allowed Dillon to make a second attempt and record a time.

Carl Edwards led the final round of knockout qualifying by taking the pole with a lap of 14.991 seconds at 127.997 mph. It was his 18th career Sprint Cup pole, his third at Bristol and his second consecutive pole this season.

Matt Kenseth will start on the outside of row one after clocking in at 15.059 seconds at 127.419 mph.

The 10 other drivers who made it to the final round of qualifying were Joey Logano, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Harvick, Martin Truex Jr., A.J. Allmendinger, Trevor Bayne, Kasey Kahne and Brad Keselowski. All are listed in the order they’ll start Sunday’s race.
