Harvick to Start 11th in Coca-Cola 600

Pre-Race Reports | NASCAR Cup Series | 05/22/14

Qualifying Results

• Kevin Harvick and the No. 4 Budweiser Folds of Honor Chevrolet SS team will start Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 from the 11th starting position following Thursday night’s qualifying session at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

• Harvick ended the first round of qualifying scored first on the speed chart and advanced to the second round. He posted the fourth-fastest lap in round two and moved on to the final segment. The team planned to wait until toward the end of the third round for Harvick to make his final qualifying run, but their strategy backfired when, due to a miscommunication, the No. 4 car didn’t make it to the start/finish line in time for his lap to count. The No. 20 team also didn’t complete a lap in the final round, so per the NASCAR rule book, their positions in the starting lineup were determined based on the previous round of qualifying. As a result, Harvick will take the green flag from the 11th position on Sunday since his lap time in round two was faster than the No. 20 team's run.

• Jimmie Johnson scored the pole award for the Coca-Cola 600. Brad Keselowski, Kasey Kahne, Danica Patrick and Clint Bowyer complete the top-five starting positions.

• Teams had an 80-minute practice session on Thursday afternoon to prepare for qualifying. The No. 4 Budweiser Folds of Honor Chevrolet team focused solely on qualifying trim during the session. Harvick made four runs and posted the second-fastest lap of the practice on his final run.

• On Saturday, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams will have two additional practices at 9:30 a.m. ET and 1 p.m. ET to prepare for Sunday’s 600-mile race. FOX Sports 1 will provide live coverage of both sessions.

Harvick on what it takes to be successful in Sunday's 600-mile race at Charlotte Motor Speedway:

“The key is just keeping up with the race track. In the beginning, just taking what the car will give you and trying to keep yourself in a good position to stay on the lead lap and make solid pit road entrances and exits and getting into your box. You just try to keep making yourself as good as you can lap after lap. In the end there is just a lot that can happen throughout the day and into night. You just have to be patient to get yourself within at least 100 miles of the end so that you can still be in contention.”

The following is the starting position of the other SHR teams in Sunday's race:

• Danica Patrick and the No. 10 GoDaddy Chevrolet team will start fourth.

• Tony Stewart and the No. 14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobile 1 Chevrolet team will start 18th.

• Kurt Busch and the No. 41 Haas Automation Made in America Chevrolet team will start 28th.
