Boy's Wish of a Lifetime Granted
STERLING -
A special local little boy by the name of Corey Milton from Sterling recently
enjoyed the experience of a lifetime, thanks to the organization Kids Wish
Network.
Milton, who is 11 years old and suffers from muscular dystrophy, couldn’t
believe it when his wish was granted. His wish: To meet his all-time favorite
NASCAR racer, Kevin Harvick.
Corey was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in 2001. DMD is one of
the most progressive forms of muscular dystrophy and is characterized by
extremely rapid deterioration of the muscles. The disease begins by affecting
primarily the legs and pelvis and later affects the entire body. Children
with Duchenne are typically wheelchair bound by their teens. Corey is
experiencing increasing difficulty with his mobility and relies on a
wheelchair. He also requires oxygen at night.
That’s where the Kids Wish Network came into play. It wasn’t long before
Corey’s mother, Charity, learned about what the organization was about and
what they did. Her son had already been through a great deal in his young
life, and she was hopeful that he would qualify for a wish with the charity.
She submitted Corey’s name and began the application process. Before long,
Steva Stewart, a wish coordinator with Kids Wish Network, contacted Charity,
giving her the good news that Cory had been approved.
Stewart began working hard to make Corey’s wish come true immediately. In
addition to arranging for airline tickets to Las Vegas and hotel
accommodations, she also secured tickets to the NASCAR Bush Series race at
the local Speedway in Las Vegas. Most importantly, Stewart scheduled a
special meet-and-greet with Corey and Harvick.
This was a big deal to Corey and his family because the little boy comes from
a long line of NASCAR fans. It was definitely a special treat for this
extraordinary young fan when he got to meet his hero at the Las Vegas
Speedway. Charity said the meet-and-greet between her son and Harvick was
incredibly touching.
“This was great for Corey, but special for me as well,” Charity said. “I grew
up a Harvick fan, so it was sort of a two-for-one deal.”
