Great Expectations At RCR

Written off as washed up two years ago, Richard Childress
Racing has stormed back to the top of the sport. Richard Childress has high
expectations for second-year driver Clint Bowyer and says it will be a
disappointment if Bowyer fails to qualify for the Chase for the NASCAR Nextel
Cup this season. Childress hopes to get all three of his teams into the
expanded Chase. His other two drivers, Kevin Harvick and Jeff Burton, made
the field last year. Harvick is on the shortlist of title contenders, and
Burton isn't far off it. . . .
Despite all the talk about how much money Toyota is (or isn't) dumping into
the sport, Toyota team owner Michael Waltrip says the pressure to perform
comes from sponsors. He says the sponsors outspend Toyota by a vast sum.
Although Toyota has tried to diminish expectations and hasn't publicly said
it expects victories right away, sponsors aren't so patient. Waltrip owns
three teams, only one of which (Dale Jarrett's) is guaranteed a spot in each
of the season's first five races. "Our sponsors say, 'We have to win right
now,' " Waltrip says. . . .
The feud between Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Teresa Earnhardt will not end until
Junior signs a new contract, if then. Fellow drivers, including Harvick and
Jeff Gordon, have taken notice of the spat. Harvick criticized Teresa
Earnhardt for never being at the track. "It doesn't seem like she cares about
it as much as the other owners," he said...
